The Draft Horse Journal has been highlighting the major shows and sales since 1964. Articles cover harness, working horses, draft horse keeping, draft health issues, and important horses, breeds, and horsepeople. Also important are the advertisements - the DHJ serves as a directory of services and supplies for the draft horse industry. Expect to keep your issues for future reference. Usually around 220-240 pp.

We got this for our daughter, an avid horse jumper, but found we like it, too. It has wonder expert columns, great pictures, helpful event information, and Q & A columns.

Linda from NC, USA, 5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love this Magazine!, August 24, 2002
I've been purchasing this magazine off the newsstand off and on for about 2 years, and recently purchased a subscription. Although often more entertaining then informative, this magazine contains lots of great articles for English or Western riders. Lots of good humor, links to resourceful horse websites, plenty of regular columns from famous horse people, and health, showing, or pleasure-related articles combined make this magazine an enjoyable read for horse lovers of all ages and skill levels.

Tamara J Hess from APO, AE United States, 4 out of 5 stars Great Magazine for the Sport Horse Breeder!, January 7, 2003
I found this magazine to be very helpful for the average sport horse breeder and rider. It has specialized issues that interview individual breeders and allows them to speak about what is happening in the sport horse world. It also has specialized issues for Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping that give training advise. I would recomend this magazine for those who are interested in keeping up to date with the sport horse breeding industry or just what to get good information about the horses that they are riding.

Sharon Upchurch from Canton, Missouri United States, 5 out of 5 stars The classic horseman's magazine!!, December 11, 2002
I can't remember when I started reading Western Horseman. My mother had a subscription back in the fifties, even though we had Arabians and half-Arabians. As the title suggests, Western Horseman is a magazine for western horsemen. Back in the fifties you wouldn't see an English saddle in the magazine. However, I read it cover-to-cover then and I read it that way now. Even during the time I couldn't own a horse, I read Western Horseman. Nowdays, they occasionally include a horse with an English or, more likely, an Australian or Endurance saddle among all those western stock seat saddles. But that is fine. Western Horseman is what it claims to be, the premier magazine for western horsemen even if they don't live in the west or ride stock seat. The magazine is full of information about western stock horse disciplines. Their articles are basic and practical. Their writers are people I have never met but whose names are as familiar to me as my next-door-neighbor. They write about horse people. I have learned about rodeo clowns, bullriders, cowboy poets and western artists as well as horses. They write about the western way of life and those people who try to preserve it even as it changes around them. So, if you buy Western Horseman, and I hope you do, don't expect to read only about horses, although you will find plenty about horses. Expect to read about western horsemen in all their variations.

A magazine reader from Merrimack, N. H. United States, 5 out of 5 stars Contest-Lover, April 17, 2002
I love Young Rider magazine! Anything you ever wanted to know about horses and ponies is in this magazine. There are a lot of contests, usually about five to six per magazine, that you can participate in. The best part for me is that you don't have to be "18 or older to enter". I enter every contest I can, and Young Rider is my best opportunity for contests. Plus, the prizes are great, even if you don't own a horse! You can even send a letter and get a penpal! I don't have a horse, but I love this magazine anyway, and it's always good to know about horses in case you ever drive by one. You'll know to slow down instead of just zooming by. You can learn the names of parts of the horse and equipment, as well as getting introduced to books and authors who have written books about horses and ponies. The only bad part is waiting for the next issue to come in the mail. All in all, this is a great magazine that I encourage anyone who likes horses to get!
